Mission Update: Voyager 1 Continues to Explore Interstellar Space
As of 2013, the Voyager 1 space probe was hurtling through space at an astonishing speed of 61,197 kilometers per hour (38,026 mph), or 54 astronomical units (AU) per year. This incredible velocity has propelled the probe far beyond the confines of our solar system and into the vast expanse of interstellar space.
Both Voyager 1 and its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2, have successfully entered interstellar space and continue their extraordinary voyages through the universe. In January 2024, Voyager 1 reached an unprecedented distance of 136 AU (15 billion miles or 20 billion kilometers) from Earth, becoming the farthest human-made object from our planet.
In a recent update, the ground team sent a command to Voyager 1 to reprogram part of its onboard memory. The probe successfully executed the task, demonstrating its ongoing functionality despite its immense distance from Earth. It takes approximately 22-and-a-half hours for a radio signal to travel from Earth to Voyager 1, adding a significant delay to communication.
According to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Voyager 1 is currently zipping through space at an astounding speed of 38,000 mph (17 kilometers per second). This remarkable journey is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of human exploration.
