Biden: Israel warned over response to Lebanon strike
Israeli warplanes flew over Beirut after Hezbollah rockets killed a teenager
Hezbollah is an Iranian-backed Lebanese military group
The Biden administration has warned Israel against hitting Hezbollah targets in Beirut in response to a deadly strike on the Golan Heights on Saturday.
Israel blamed Hezbollah for an attack on a soccer field that killed 12 children and teenagers. In January, Israel took out a senior Hamas leader in Beirut. In April, Israel killed a top commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria.
Israeli warplanes broke the sound barrier over Beirut and other areas of Lebanon on Tuesday, Lebanese security sources and media reported. The strikes by Hezbollah started on 8 October, the day after the deadly Hamas attack on Israel, with the group saying they were in support for Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The Biden administration has urged both sides to avoid further escalation. A US official said the administration was "deeply concerned" about the situation and called on all parties to "exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to further violence."
