His thirst for knowledge led him to North Carolina Central University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration from North Carolina State University.

His journey began in 1989 as a Probation/Parole Officer with the North Carolina Department of Correction, where his dedication to rehabilitation and restorative justice left an indelible mark. In 2000, he transitioned to the Wake County Sheriff's Office, assuming the role of Chief of Staff. During his tenure, Brian played a pivotal role in implementing innovative programs, including the nationally recognized Smart Start program, aimed at reducing recidivism and supporting successful reintegration into the community.

Brian's leadership extended beyond law enforcement as he served as the Executive Director of the Wake County Human Services Commission from 2012 to 2014.
